Help rid society of curse of child marriage: Mrs. Ranjana Baghel

Citizens and public representatives should cooperate

Bhopal, May 6, 2011 (Ataullah Faizan):   Minister of State of Woman and Child Development (Independent charge) Mrs. Ranjana Baghel has urged citizens and public representatives to cooperate in getting the society rid of the curse of child marriage. She has urged the public representatives to ensure that child marriages do not take place at any cost in their respective areas. Mrs. Baghel has said that a social evil cannot be eradicated only through the efforts of the government. But the entire society must participate in the process. According to Mrs. Baghel, child marriage is such a curse, which deprives girl children of education and personality development and also affects their physical and mental growth. When a girl is married off in tender age, she gives birth to a weak child and thus an entire generation becomes victim of malnutrition. The Minister of State for Woman and Child Development also drew people’s attention towards the fact that child marriage is against the interest of entire nation and society and therefore, priority should be given to check this malady. Mrs. Baghel said that the state government has chalked out a plan to check child marriages this year too.

The copies of the action plan have been sent to the district collectors with the instructions to follow them strictly.  The government has also drawn district collectors’ attention towards some special dates when child marriages are performed on a large scale. One of these dates is May 6, when marriages of sub-adult couples are solemnised on a large scale on the occasion of Akshay Tritiya or Akha Teej. They have been asked to remain especially alert on such occasions. She said that with the cooperation of district collectors, the Woman and Child Development Department has launched an awareness campaign this year as well.
