They motivated those not using toilet to use it through various ways.   Sharma Yatras were taken out in villages and vessels and bottles used in open-area defecation were burnt in full public view. Pledge was administered to villagers. They were apprised of demerits of open-area defecation. Children were specially counselled. Habit of insistence was inculcated among children. When women urged in-laws for construction of toilet, it led to domestic feuds due to which food was not cooked for days in the house.

Indore district has created history in sanitation sector. Entire rural area of the district has got rid of practice of open-area defecation. After Nadia district of West Bengal, Indore is second district to achieve this distinction. They created awareness about it door-to-door. Now, teams of children and women keep vigil since 4 in the morning that no one defecates in the open. Over 10 thousand children in the district took part in this drive and still constantly active. Women composed a folk song to create atmosphere against open-area defecation.
