3 cities of Madhya Pradesh selected in first list of smart cities

Bhopal, January 29, 2016 (Muslim Saleem):  Chief Minister Mr. Shivrj Singh Chouhan has expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Urban Development Mr. M. Venkaiah Naidu for including Bhopal, Indore and Jabalpur cities of Madhya Pradesh in the first list of 20 Smart Cities selected by the central government. Describing it as a matter of immense pride for the state he thanked Mr. Modi and Mr. Naidu on behalf of the citizens of these three cities. Mr. Chouhan said that NDA government’s novel concept of Smart Cities generated a healthy competition among cities to improve civic services in larger public interest. Congratulating the Mayors and team of officials of 3 selected cities the Chief Minister said that their relentless hard work has paid off. He extended best wishes to them. The Chief Minister called for a resolve to work hard to turn dream of Smart Cities into reality. It will bring about sea change in urban life, he added. It may be mentioned here that maximum 3 cities of Madhya Pradesh have been selected in the first list of 20 Smart Cities selected by the central government. In the first phase, 2 years’ grant i.e. Rs. 200 crore will be immediately released by Central government followed by Rs. 100 crore each for next 3 years. Madhya Pradesh has chalked out a scheme of about Rs. 5000 crore for Smart Cities. Under it, funds would be raised from developing local resources in addition to amounts from Central and state governments.

Proposals for Smart City have been made in keeping with city’s needs and population. No additional burden will accrue to citizens due to development of Smart City. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Mr. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, maximum 3 cities of the state have been selected under project. The Chief Minister wishes that better results come to the fore in next 3 years. Union Minister of Urban Development Mr. Venkaiah Naidu announced names of first 20 cities under the project in New Delhi today. The Union Minister announced names of 20 cities following competition among 97 cities of the country. Mr. Naidu said that this competition is like that of Union Public Service Commission.
