Awareness among people necessary for tiger conservation
Mr. Murthy gives interesting information at lecture
Bhopal, March 27, 2016 (Ataullah Faizan): Tiger is considered a symbol of power and beauty. Tiger is global heritage. Awareness among people is necessary for tiger conservation. Ban on tiger hunting in year 1969 and framing of Wildlife Protection Act in 1972 have strengthened efforts for tiger conservation in the country. Kanha tiger reserve was selected first by the Central government for tiger conservation. Of the 49 tiger reserves in the country, 7 are in Madhya Pradesh. This was stated by Chief Conservator of Forests Mr. R. Shriniwas Murthy at lecture series ‘History of Tiger Conservation in Madhya Pradesh’ organised by State Tourism Development Corporation here today. Mr. Murthy gave interesting information about wildlife, mainly tiger conservation and augmentation in Madhya Pradesh. Mr. Murthy informed that from Mughal period till British rule, tigers were conserved for hunting. Efforts for scientific augmentation of tigers from environmental view point began only after 1963 and are continuing. Important information about tiger conservation and breeding was given. He informed that there used to be 8 species of tiger. Of these, only Royal Bengal Tiger, Siberian, South Chinese, Indo-Chinese and Sumatran tiger species have survived and remaining have become extinct. Mr. Murthy informed that in India, tiger has been declared as National Animal. Every one is pleased to see a tiger. Despite being looking fearsome, a tiger is charming and gentle. In his presentation, Mr. Murthy made special mention of Captain Forsyth’s book, Rudyard Coupling’s ‘Jungle Book’ and Jim Corbett’s book on Madhya Pradesh’s forest. He described India as focal point for tiger conservation.
Referring to ‘Panna Story’ about Kanha Chronology Project Tiger, declaration of buffer area and translocation of tigers in Panna tiger reserve, Mr. Murthy informed about pugmark counting and camera trap system for tiger census. Mr. Murthy also informed about discovery of white tiger Mohan and efforts to increase its progeny. At the outset, MD Mr. Hari Ranjan Rao informed about Corporation’s intellectual activities in the form of lecture series and announced to hold it every 2 months. Corporation’s Additional MD Miss Tanvi Sundariyal, other officers and inquisitive audience were present on the occasion.
