Rape by hospital staff: Every bone of these two rapists should be broken

GURGAON: A 22-year-old woman undergoing treatment for depression was allegedly forced into an empty room, gagged to ensure she doesn’t scream for help and raped by two hospital workers late on Monday at SHKM Government Medical College in Mewat, the Haryana district adjoining Gurgaon.

One of the suspects has been identified as a ward boy and the other a security guard. Neither has been arrested.

The woman was in Ward No. 17 on the hospital’s fifth floor when the ward boy called her out around 11.30pm, police said. As she stepped out of the ward and started walking towards the lounges, where her relatives were staying, the ward boy grabbed her and pushed her inside the empty room. The guard, who had stationed himself near the room, followed them inside and gagged the woman, police said, before the duo raped her.

The assault might have continued for nearly two hours as police said they received a call from the hospital after 1 am. The woman’s brother-in-law, who was in the lounge, had come to check on her and found her stole lying outside a room along the passage. As he raised the alarm, the ward boy and the guard fled from the room. The woman had passed out.

Police said they have identified the ward boy, who is a private staffer on contract at the hospital, and raids were on to nab him and the guard. The two have been booked on charges of rape and criminal conspiracy.

The woman, a mother of three who lives in Mewat, was admitted to the hospital on June 2. In her statement to police on Tuesday, she has said she was asleep in her bed in the female general ward when the ward boy woke her up, saying her son — who was with her brother-in-law and sister in the lounge — was crying and her relatives were calling her to pacify the child.

“In the preliminary investigation, we have found the involvement of two outsourced employees, including a ward boy. We have identified the ward boy and he will be arrested soon. A probe is on,” Mamta Singh, IG (south range) told TOI.

Dr Sansarchand Sharma, director of the hospital, said, “This is a shocking and unacceptable incident. We will terminate the services of the accused and fully cooperate in the investigation.”

SHKM hospital is a fairly large facility that was started in August 2012 as a tertiary care hospital. It is just 40km from Gurgaon and has 400 beds.
