Born to Abdul Saleem Askari and Shadi Habib Agha in Mumbai on 31 July 1947, just 15 days before India got her independence, Mumtaz first appeared in as child artist in Sanskar in 1952. It was followed by few more films like Yasmin in 1955, Lajwanti in 1958, and Sone Ki Chidiya in 1958. O. P. Ralhan’s Gehra Daag in 1963 was the first films where Mumtaz featured as an adult. Post that the veteran actress featured in few B grade films, until Do Raaste with Rajesh Khanna happened in 1969.

The film was a blockbuster and gave the industry it’s first superstar Rajesh Khanna, Mumtaz too rose to fame like never before and became the highest paid actress in the industry. Be it her style, expressions, talent and beauty, Mumtaz was loved for her every act and thing. From big banner blockbusters, to all major film awards, Mumtaz had everything, when she suddenly decided to quit the glamour world to get married to businessman Mayur Madhvani in 1974. The couple has two daughters Natasha and Tanya.

Mumtaz agreed to act in films as a junior artist and started appearing in group-scenes, at a very young age, when her family faced financial crisis.
