PUNE: The Hinjewadi police have arrested a 35-year-old software engineer, a resident of Sus Road, for allegedly uploading the cellphone number of his wife on a website which offered escort services.
The suspect, who works in a company based in Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, committed the crime to harass his 33-year-old wife. He is from Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh.
On July 22, she had lodged a complaint with the Hinjewadi police station against unknown persons for uploading her cellphone number and other details on a website, following which she began receiving obscene calls from strangers.
A case against the unknown persons was registered under the provisions of Information Technology (IT), Act, 2000. Police also invoked sections of cheating under the Indian Penal Code against the suspects.
The woman also works in a software company, senior police inspector Arun Waykar of the Hinjewadi police station said.
Police obtained details of the website and started searching the internet protocol (IP) address of the computer or electronic device which was used to upload her information.
“A few days later, we received the IP address of the device. We visited the location where the IP address was registered and found that it was the same residential address provided by the victim as her address in the complaint. We later got to know that the information was uploaded from a tablet which was owned by her husband,” he said.
During interrogation, the suspect told police that he had uploaded his wife’s cellphone number and other details on the escort service’s website to trouble her.
“He told us that his wife often used to pick fights with him which frustrated him. He wanted to teach her a lesson and, therefore, uploaded her details on the website two months ago. The couple got married three years ago,” Waykar said.
