The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday arrested a sitting Haryana judge – Ravneet Garg+ , for the murder of his wife Geetanjali Garg in 2013.
Ravneet Garg, presently posted as Civil Judge in Kaithal, Haryana, was Chief Judicial Magistrate in July 2013 when his wife’s bullet-ridden body was found at police lines in Gurgaon. It was initially being treated as a suicide but when Geetanjali’s family alleged that she was being harassed for dowry+ , a CBI enquiry was demanded.
CBI officials said that the judge has been arrested under sections 302 and 34 (murder committed with common intention), of the Indian Penal Code. He has been taken into CBI custody for five days.
CBI had filed a case against Ravneet Garg and his parents in August 2013, a month after the murder (on July 17).
Geetanjali’s family had alleged the harassment by Ravneet Garg’s family started from the birth of the couple’s first daughter and things worsened after their second girl child was born. Her brother Pradeep Aggarwal and father Om Prakash, who live in Panchkula, had also demanded a narco test on Ravneet Garg, saying the mystery behind her death needs to be brought out.
The couple got married to Ravneet in 2007.
