Meerut: Struggling with debts of over Rs 1.5 crore, five members of a family committed suicide at their house in Raghukul Vihar in Meerut’s TP Nagar area late on Thursday night. Four of them hanged themselves while one consumed poison. The bodies were discovered only on Friday morning when their domestic help informed the police, after knocking on their door and trying their cellphone failed to get a response.
Leaving the neighbourhood in a state of shock, the family even left a four-page printed suicide note detailing about their debts and how the money could be recovered by selling their property.
Hansraj Bhadauria, station officer, TP Nagar police station, said, “We got to know about the incident at 9:45am on Friday. The door was locked from the inside, proof that no outsider committed the crime. While the head of the family, Mohan Arora (70), was found dead on a bed after apparently consuming poison, the other four members had hanged themselves.”
The deceased have been identified as Mohan Arora (70), his wife Krishna (64), Mohan’s son Vinit (40), his wife Puja (38) and their son Abhishek (18).
“The incident came to light when Mohan’s clerk and neighbhours informed the TP Nagar police station after no one opened the door this morning despite repeated knocking,” he said, adding a police team broke the door to recover the bodies.
“Prima facie from three suicide notes- written by Mohan, Vineet and Puja- recovered from the spot it seems they entered in a suicide pact,” the SSP said.
The notes said the family was facing financial problems after Mohan suffered huge losses in his business, he added.
The TP Nagar police is probing the case. The bodies have been sent for postmortem.
