AIRPORT THAT IS SUBMERGED IN SEA DAILY, ONE OF THE BEST IN WORLD

airportOne of the world’s most scenic airstrips that can only be used when the tide is out is celebrating its 80th birthday.

The first planes landed on the sand in the wide bay of Traigh Mhor on the Outer Hebridean island of Barra in June 1936.

It was officially licensed as an airport in August that year.

Flights to and from Barra are dictated by the tide and its three runways are fully submerged at high tide.

The airport has three runways with the use of them dependent on the tide being out

But trade is booming. The airport saw its passenger numbers soar by more than 50 percent last winter.

Last year it recorded the highest percentage rise of any of the 11 airports operated by Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd – up 10.7 percent with 11,663 flyers.

And the increase shows no sign of slowing.

Barra saw a huge take off in passenger numbers in the final quarter of last year and the first three months of 2016.

The famous landing, which celebrates its 80th anniversary this year, recorded the highest percentage rise in the six month period among the 11 airports operated by Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd.

Though the numbers were relatively small – 2175 in the last quarter of 2015, compared to 1755 for the same period the previous year – the 420 rise equated to a near quarter increase.

Twin Otter airplane landing on the Traigh Mhor beach runway of Barra ut between January and March this year the numbers soared to 2428 – up 55.5 per cent on the same quarter in 2015.

A spokesman for HIAL said Barra’s boom may be explained by having an extra 146 flights since the start of the year as a result of an enhanced Public Service Obligation on the subsidised route.

But extra flyers may be flocking to Barra in the Outer Hebrides simply because of its picturesque landing, famously featured in the Martin Clunes’ film Staggered.

Two new aeroplanes that serve the unique beach airstrip started on the route last year.

The Twin Otter aircraft were ordered by the Scottish Government to provide a lifeline air service to Barra, Tiree and Campbeltown.

The 19-seat Twin Otter aircraft were specially selected as they are able to land on Barra, which was also recently named in the top ten of the world’s most scenic approaches.

In the poll of more than 3000 people by PrivateFly.com it was listed fourth and among some of the world’s most iconic destinations, including winner Malta, second place Nice in France, and third place Queenstown in New Zealand.

Among the comments from flyers were: ‘It is unique being probably the only airport with a tidal beach as the airstrip. Flying in over the sea whatever the weather is awesome and ever changing.

‘The view of the island, the colours of the sea and the bird life are out of this world. Should be on everyone’s bucket list.’

And judge Adam Twidell described Barra as ‘a unique opportunity to land on a tidal beach runway, this really is an out-of-this-world arrival into Scotland’s outer Hebrides.’

There are about 60 private light aircraft flights to Barra per year.
