Remember Chachi 420? Of course you do. If you are a ’90s brat, chances are you have seen the Kamal Haasan classic umpteen times on television. And if you were born a little after that, never mind, you have still seen the film quite a few times…at least enough to remember the naughty little kid Bharti Ratan played by ‘Baby Sana’.
Well, Baby Sana is now all grown up and is starring as Geeta Phogat, winner of the gold medal in wrestling (55 kg category) at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Credited as Fatima Sana Shaikh, the young girl plays the daughter and student of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat played by Aamir Khan in Dangal.
As Bharti Ratan, Sana played the daughter of the characters of Kamal Haasan and Tabu in the 1997 film Chachi 420. There, Kamal and Tabu play a separated couple while the daughter, played by Sana, is staying with the mother i.e Tabu. Sana’s role as the rough and tough wrestler Geeta Phogat is a farcry from her natkhat avatar in Chachi 420.
In fact, the actor starred in a handful of films between 1997 and 2016. She starred alongside Shah Rukh Khan in the 2001 film One 2 Ka 4 and played an important character in multiple award-winning cinematographer and director Santosh Sivan’s 2008 film Tahaan.
Geeta’s sister Babita Kumari who won a silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games is being played by Sanya Malhotra. The film is directed by Chillar Party director Nitesh Tiwari and will release in theatres on December 23, this year.
