Abdul Mateen Niaz

Abdul Mateen Niazyad e basitHe was born in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh but lived at Bhopal since the age of eight and died in Bhopal in 2008: Was a prolific poet. He lived in celibacy and penury throughout his life. Even then he was a much-spirited person. He first met me at Allahabad in 1978 and after I shifted to Bhopal, I sometimes met him and enquired about his well-being. He published several collections of his poetry including Dasht-e-Ma’ani, Harf-o-Sada, Naghma-e-Sha’ur, Peetal ka Aasman and Azan-e-Sher. Niaz had started penning poetry around 1958. In my opinion Niaz deserved a major award, which eluded him because awards are not given on merit but recommendations. His best couplets include: 1. Na Mere paas hai maazi, na haal-o-mustaqbil….jo naqsh main ne banaya bigad gaya mujh se 2. Jo din tulu’u bhi hoga to is qayamt se……udasiyan mere mahaul mein saja de ga 3. Saja raha hai naye aasmaN wo mere liye…..idhar ye haal hai mera ke par-shikasta hoon

He has more than a dozen books to his credit.

His original name was Abu Muhammad Abul Qasim who took “Takhallus” (pen name) “Sahar” when he started penning poetries in the form of Nazm, Ghazal, Rubayee etc. Interestingly he had command over English language also and in the beginning wrote articles about literature and philosophy in English which had much depth.

His book “Urdu MeiN Qaseedah Nigari” is prescribed by many universities for MA (Urdu) students. He was recipient of “Fakhruddin Ali Ahmad Ghalib Award Barai Tahqueeq 1984” apart from some other notable awards. He was literary giant who is seen with awe and respect in the Urdu world circle,

Ahad Prakash

Born on June 17, 1951 at Bareli town in Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh to Ahmadullah Khan. Writes ghazals, children’s literature. Books “Chun Chun Chun and Awaz ka Prakash” Awards: Bal Sahitya Samman, Kanpur and Kahkashan-e-Adab Bhopal.

AHAD PRAKASH A GREAT ALL-ROUND GENIUS OF URDU/HINDI: MUSLIM SALEEM

Ahad Prakash’s works are so immense and so diverse that it is impossible to sum up his life and deeds in just one article. Therefore, I ill write four different articles one by one namely:-

  1. Ahad Prakash a great writer of children’s poems and stories
  2. Ahad Prakash as a sensitive and expressive thinking poet
  3. Ahad Prakash as a analytical, logical critic & writer, and;
  4. Ahad Prakash as an attractive writer of  Urdu/Hindi geets.

AHAD PRAKASH A GREAT WRITER OF CHILDREN’S POEMS AND STORIES

This write up attempts to sum up Ahad Prakash’s contribution as a writer of children’s poems and stories. His work in this field is so vast, grasping and enchanting that Ahad Prakash can easily be regarded as “Ismail Meerathi” of present era. He has penned beautiful poems and snippet stories for children in very easy, flowing and impressive language for over 45 years. He has published several books for children and his works have been continuously been published in major newspapers and periodicals of Urdu and Hindi in India.

In Madhya Pradesh, Ahad Prakash can be regarded as the Supreme Commander of children’ army. There no poet and writer of Urdu and Hindi in Madhya Pradesh or for that matter in entire India, who can measure up to Ahad Prakash’s works. Hats off to him. With this, I am presenting some clippings showing his prowess in the field of children’s fiction. (Muslim Saleem – 8 February 2017)

Basit Bhopali was a poet of ghazal primarily though he wrote other forms of poetry as well. He started penning poetry around 1923 at the young age of 16. This was a turbulent period when freedom struggle and communist movement on one hand and on the other hand repressive tactics of the Bhopal State were in full swing. But Basit neither involved himself in any of the movements nor tried to seek favours from the Nawabs and kept penning ghazals in his own style. Unlike his rival Sheri Bhopali, he did not visit other cities to attend Mushairas. Basit also did not send his works to be published in magazines. Even then, he was a poet of big stature and the Urdu litterateurs coming to Bhopal like Niaz Fatehpuri, Syed Ehtisham Hussain, Prof. Ale Ahmad Suroor were impressed by him. The collection of his poetry has been named as “Karwaan-e-Sukhan”. Best couplets:

Sari duniya aaina Basit……………Jaisi nigaahen, waise nazare
Abhi aadaab-e-nazar aap ko kam aate hain
Aaina haath se rakh deejiye ham aate hain
Basit Bhopali also wrote ‘rubaa’is” with aplomb. Here is a specimen:
Saadiq hai har eik zarre pe heere ki misaal
Talab ka paani hai ke chandi sayyal
Aaina-e-firdaus jise kehte hain
Ai dost haqeeqat mein wuhi hai Bhopal.

Fazl Tabish (general spelt as Fazal Tabish)

Fazl TabishApart from being Secretary of MP Urdu Akademy, Fazl Tabish was also a good poet and candid person.

Fazal Tabish, Urdu zubaan ka baaNkaa shaair thaa. This is often you get to hear about Fazal Sahab (1933-1995). I had heard a lot about him especially his personality and bohemian lifestyle.

In my school days I knew him through his son, who was our teacher. But I never met him. It was only after his death that I read some of his poetry and was instantly drawn towards it. Fazal’s poetry is different in the sense that all his ghazals and Nazms stand out amongst hundreds of contemporary poets of his generation.

muslim saleem with fazal tabish and hasan kamal at Bhopal 1982

shakhsiyat hai ki sirf gaalii hai

jaane kis shakhs ne uchhaalii hai

shahar dr shahar haath ugte haiN

kuchh to hai jo har ek savaalii hai

jo bhii haath aaye TuuT kar chaaho

haar ke yah ravish nikaalii hai

meer kaa dil kahaaN se laaoge

Khuun kii buund to bachaa lii hai

jism meN bhii utar ke dekh liyaa

haath Khaalii thaa ab bhii khaalii hai

resha resha udheD kar dekho

roshnii kis jagah se kaalii hai

din ne chehraa kharoNch Daalaa thaa

jab to suuraj pe Khaak Daalii hai

A group of Qawwals rendered it at a function a few years back. They sung it differently and started with the last two couplets but had a magical affect on the audience. Of course, his sexually explicit couplets once floated across the Urdu world:

chaahte the aazmuudaa aurat ka visaal

khair jaisii bhii haath aaye, nibhaayaa chaahiye….(aazmuuda=experienced)

But it is Nazm where Fazal Tabish reveals his brilliance. Never in the history of Urdu poetry, a poet had treated the subject of sex like Fazal did. Amongst the voices of Nazm in the post-Progressive movement era, Shaharyar, Nida Fazli, Shamsur Rahman Faruqi, Ameeq Hanafi are counted but I surely consider Fazal amongst them. His nazm for another day.

Habeeb Ahmad: (Died on October 26, 2016 at Bh0pal)

His was a big name in the Urdu world of MadhyaPradesh even through he was neither a poet nor writer or critic. But even then he  put in valuable service for Urdu. Without any remuneration, Habeeb Ahmad had been bringing out Sunday Edition of daily Nadeem by the name ‘Adab Nama’ for the last about quarter century. Many special issues of ‘Adam Nama’ have won critical acclaims including those featuring on Sir Syed, Fazal Tabish, Maulana Inam-ur-Rehman Khan, She’ri Bhopali, Taj Bhopali etc. Adab Nama’s popularity can be gauged from the fact that an Indore girl student did her MA (Urdu) desertation on this subject. Habeeb Ahmad was born in Bhopal on July 1, 1949 and resided at Habiba Manzil, 74-Ashoka Colony, Nur Mahal Road, Bhopal.

Iftikhar Jaleel Shauq::

I (Muslim Saleem) met him for the first and last time in 1994 when Shauq was in Bhopal for many months. Though Shauq had migrated to Pakistan and settled in Karachi, his heart rested in Bhopal. His biggest achievement is ‘Majalla-e-Bhopal. It is comprehensive 250 page magazine, which he published from Karachi after his two-month sojourn at Bhopal during which he met almost all the luminaries of Bhopal and collected their pictures and material written by them or on them and then published it in the form a magazine, which he christened as Majalla-e-Bhopal. At the time of his visit in 1994, I was doing night shift with National Mail.

Muslim Saleem (left) with Iftikhar Jaleel Shaug. For some year I had been clean-shaved.

I was deeply impressed by his sincerity towards and attachment with Bhopal. Though I used to be tired during the day time due to nigh duty, I helped him by taking him on my scooter wherever he wanted to go for collecting material for the magazine and meeting people. I wrote following poem in his honour, which he carried on page 151 of Majalla-e-Bhopal. Nazr-e-Iftikhar Jaleel Shauq Karey Karachi ko Bhopal zaar Shauq apna Ho kyun na baais-e-sad Iftikhar Shauq apna Na kohsaar, na ye taal us se chhota hai Ye kaun kahta hai Bhopal us se (Karachi se) chhota hai Ba faiz-shauq isi anjuman mein rahta hai Watan sey door hai lekin watan mein rahta hai Majalla us ney jo Bhopal par nikala hai Har ahl-e-Ilm-o-adab ka wo ik hawalaa hai Kitabi shakl di berozgar ho kar bhi Na rok paai qadam us key tangi-e-zar bhi Khuda-e-paak sey Muslim Saleem ki hai dua Ho uska naam bhi roshan mere watan jaisa

Muslim Saleem (left) is reading out his short story at the flat of Dr Shafiqa Farhat in 1994. Iftikhar Jaleel Shauq his sitting beside him.

Unfortunately, I could not recite this poem before him. There was a farewell function for him in the night and due to my duty, I was unable to attend this function. Therefore, I gave this poem to Iqbal Masood, who recited this in the function on my behalf. The following morning Shauq departed from Bhopal but published the poem in the magazine. Shauq also carried a number of my ghazals and pictures in the magazine. Others who pictures have been published in Majalla-e-Bhopal include Akhtar Saeed Khan, Dr Mamnoon Hasan Khan, Sheri Bhopali, Iqbal Majeed, Javed Saba, Sikandar Hafiz Khan, Ghazanfar Ali Khan (editor of Aftab-e-Jadeed) with his brother and editor of Dawn Karachi Ahmad Ali Khan, Naib Qazi Ameer Ullah, Abdur Rauf Khan, Muzaffar Raees, Qamar Jamali, Shaukat Ramuzi, Maqsood Imrani, Fazal Tabish, singer Sumna Rai, singer Asma Mannan, Jamal Akhtar, Jalaluddin (Olympian), Qamar Ashfaq, Khalid Mehmood, Zafar Sehbai, Iqbal Masood, Dr Mohammad Noman Khan, Naseem Ansari, Habib Rehman Nadvi, Khalil Ullah Khan Advocate etc. (Posted by Muslim Saleem on May 21, 2010)

About Majalla-e-Bhopal: It is major document of literary, journalistic and other social activities which were going on in Bhopal as the 20th century was incharing towards its end. It is also valuable since it has been complied by a person, who is free of any bias.

Iqbal Masood

Iqbal MasoodBorn: June 4, 1950. He is the son of Mohammad Shafi Khan. Struggled hard in life. Had a teaching stint on temporary basis in Saifia College, Bhopal in 1975. Thereafter, he joined Urdu journalism a sub-editor of Aftab-e-Jadid (Now defunct) from 1979 and rose in ranks to become its editor in 1993. After closure of Aftab, he joined Madhya Pradesh Urdu Akademi and became its joint secretary (had a brief stint as acting secretary as well). He is a poet as well as writer. Book; Aitbar-e-Harfa. Address- A-23/4, Rajat Apartments, BDA Colony, Koh-e-Fiza, Bhopal. Mobile No- 9827089881. (His photos with Muslim Saleem are available on this web site)Ties with Muslim Saleem: Iqbal Masood was the first person in Bhopal to have recognised the potential of Muslim Saleem as a poet and writer. He recommended my name to various functions, where I met with success. I also worked with him as sub-editor in Aftab-e-Jadid. While Iqbal Masood was a reporter, I looked after the front page. In 1983, I moved to Hindi journalism (Dainik Bhaskar) and then to English journalism (National Mail, Central Chronicle and now Hindustan Times) in 1986. For about 20 years, we did not meet despite living in the same city without any reason. He also seemed to have forgotten me so much so that when he helped in compiling a directory of Urdu poets and writers of Bhopal called Qalam Dasta, he forgot to get my name included in it though it had the names of 192 ‘litterateurs’. Then I rediscovered him in 2006, when my Aligarh friends Prof Abdul Kalam Qasmi and Fahat Ehsas came to Bhopal to attend a function at Bharat Bhavan. During his stint at Urdu Akademi, he also did not call me even once for reciting my poetry or short stories at the Akademi. But I don’t have a complaint, since I look towards Allah, Who is the giver of name and fame. By His grace, the person, whose name was not thought fit to be included in the directory of Bhopal litterateurs, has himself compiled a much larger directory which is accessible worldwide. Not only Iqbal Masood, but I have been overlooked and underestimated by my other collegues as well. But everyone should know that no one can ignore me now by the grace of Allah. And my name will also sparke in the world of Urdu literature like my illustrious grandfather Dr. Khalifa Abdul Hakeem and father Dr. Saleem Wahid Saleem, the creator of ‘Khayyam-e-Nau’.

Dedication of a book to Muslim Saleem

kausar siddiqui with muslim saleemTies with Muslim Saleem: Kausar Siddiqui is one of towering figures of Urdu literature of Bhopal. When I was managing editor of daily Aftab-e-Jadid in 1982, I used to meet him regularly. At that I time I lived at 31, Shastri Nagar, Bhopal and he was staying at a government quarter in North TT Nagar. That was the time when Noori Nastaliq had not arrived on the scene.

A specimen of Kausar Siddiqui’s khushnaweesi

Since I had worked as a professional Khattat, I had worked out some sort of tying font of Urdu. But, when I discussed the matter with Mr Siddiqui, I found him one step ahead of me. The matter came to a close since the early version of Noori Nastaliq had hit the market soon. But the depth of Mr Kausar Siddiqui’s all-round knowledge was etched in my mind. After 1983, I left Urdu journalism and gradually drifted away from active field of Urdu literature as well though I kept writing ghazals and getting them published in magazines. Times changed and faces and personalities too. In the year 2000, I faced problems with the Persian kalam of my father the late Dr. Saleem Wahid Saleem. Some words were missing from the manuscript or were illegible. I discussed the matter with Mr Idris Moonis of Fas Computronics. He said that he knew of a person, who is adapt at Persian and can do it. I went to the person living in Ginnori and got the manuscript corrected without recollecting that Kausar Siddiqui 4 bookshe is none other than the same Mr Kausar Siddiqui whom I knew since both his whereabouts and appearance had changed quite a lot. Recently, when I launched the website khojkhabarnews.com and started a directory of Urdu Poets and Writers of Madhya Pradesh, I went to Mr Kausar Siddqui and met him after a gap of over 25 years. When he mentioned that he is the brother of Qaisar-ul-Jaffri and father to Romi Jaffry, all the old memories were rekindled in my mind. He is indeed a great person and workaholic litterateur with untiring flair of writing both prose and poetry. Still, he is very down-to-earth and does not brag about his achievements. A number of pictures have been contributed by him. I thank and salute Mr Kausar Siddqui. Kailash Sarang:

Janab Kailash Sarang Saheb is not the name of an individual, but an institution. He is a multilingual giant figure as well apart from being a leader of Bharatiya Janata Party. When the history of Urdu literary world of MadhyaPradesh will be written, the name of Kailash Sarang will be written in golden letters. He is not a poet or writer of Urdu, but this beleaguered language, especially in Bhopal and large parts of MadhyaPradesh, is indebted to him a lot. He can read and write Urdu and has been a regular reader of some good Urdu magazines. At a time when Urdu and Urduwriters were going through the worst patch, it was Kailash Sarang who infused a new life in it. He brought out an Urdu weekly “Ayaz” from Bhopal for his party. The weekly ran successfully for 18 years until BJP decided to close it down. It not only gave employment to Urdu people, but also highlighted the problems of Urdu and Muslims. In 1982, the ten-year celebrations of “Ayaz” were held. A grand Mushaira was organised at Khirni Wala Maidan (Now Iqbal Maidan). It was one of the grandest Mushairas in the history of Bhopal. (I also recited my ghazals along with Atal Behari Bajpai, Qateel Shifai and other famous poets at this Mushaira). On this occasion, an Ayaz Diary was also published on each page of which was a couplet of Urdupoets. Importantly, publication of Ayaz and organisation of these celebrations were funded by sympathisers of RSS and BJP, just because of Kailash Sarang. Limitations of this directory do not allow me more space but I will write a very comprehensive article focusing on him on the same website under a separate head) Residence: Sheesh Mahal, near Moti Masjid, Bhopal phone No. 0755-2543551

Phone: 0532-2451493.

Comments by Muslim Saleem

Mehdi Jafar is a name to reckon with in the world of Urdu literary criticism. In fact, he is a literary giant of Urdu, who has not hogged due highlight since he himself underplays him out of humility. He is an extremely good poet and writer. I have the honour of interacting with him at both Allahabad and Bhopal, where Mehdi Jafar did a long stint at a top government assignment. He lived in the same Shastri Nagar colony in Bhopal where I once lived. His memory is still so sharp that when I called him over Mehdi Jafar shahid mahulimobile from Bhopal after about 25 years, he vividly remembered that I lived at a house near the post office of Shastri Nagar. Address: Mahdi Jafar, 729 Pathan Valli, Daryabad, Allahabad-211003. MoB; +91 9452495669Our first meeting was when both of us were felicitated at a function at Allahabad in 1981. Later, I used to meet him frequently and got enlightened by his vast knowledge. Our interaction came down due to my moving away from Shastri Nagar and then his retirement and settling in Allahabad. His memories were rekindled in my mind when I received collection of his poetry “Keemiya-e-Samri” and went through it. The contents of Keemiya-e-Samri – ghazals, azad ghazal and poems – are indeed additions to Urdu poetry. He has his own brand and style. His observation and thought are deep. The Mehdi Jafar I know never does anything in ordinary way.  (Muslim Saleem, December 25, 2010)

Nida Fazli was an all-rounder. He was born in Gwalior in 1938 and moved to Mumbai in 1964 to eke out a living by penning film songs. On one hand he writes couplets like…”sooraj ko chonch mein liye murgha khadaa rahaa…..khidki key pardey khol diye raat ho gayee” and on the other hands pens such lyrics for films “kabhi kisi ko mukammal jahaan naheen miltaa……..kaheen zameen to kaheen aasmaan naheen miltaa”. He also excels in prose. Best couplet

Noor Mohammad Yas or Yaas

Noor Mohammad YasBorn. January 1, 1955.Ghazal, Rubai. Books; Seepian Samandar Aag, Khushaboo Ke Jazeere, Ek Sooraj Ek Zamin Ek Asman. Address- 41, Matia Mahal Lane, Behind GPO, Bhopal.   Noor Mohammad Yaas is quite different from general breed of poets. He does not attend literary function and remains confined to his own world. But he is a good poet. In fact, he is better than the entire new generation of poets of Bhopal and can be placed second to Gauhar Jalali. He has his own style. Unlike his contemporaries, Yaas has tried his hand at ‘rubaa’is’ and has a collection of rubaa’is titled “Khushboo”, which was published in 2003. He has experimented in “rubaa’i” from as well. In all, 301 rubaa’is have been included in  his collection. Though he has been a disciple of old style poets Sheri Bhopali and Wakeel Bhopali, he is “jadeed” poet. Mobile No.        o8435902823. Representative kalaam:-

Rubaa’i

Afkar kay jangal say nikaltaa jaaon / Izhaar ki khusboo mein badaltaa jaaaon zahnoon pay banaata hus lehje kay nuqush  / awaaz ki rafter say chaltaa jaaon couplets:-

ab gha ki haqeeqat pas-e-deewar naheen hai kis dar pay yahaan parda-e-izhaar naheen hai kisi kay khwaab no is tarha tukde-tukde kar kay baar-baar uday neend, baar-baar lagay lamhon pay yaheen dawaam likh do aage to sadi ka khatma hai

Noor Mohammad Yaas has been very weak economically. I have not seen for long. Till about five years ago, Yaas was seen selling goggles on a footpath near Imami Darwaza. Despite, his poor economic conditions, it is creditable that Yaas has published three collections of poetry and has not compromised with his literary bent of mind (Muslim Saleem-Tuesday, July 19, 2011)v

(At Jashn-e-Muslim Saleem, In his paper, Dr. Qasim Niazi had lauded Muslim Saleem as a poet, writer, journalist and servant of Urdu, who has served Urdu through his websites selflessly. The octogenarian poet and writer Dr. Niazi said that whatever Muslim Saleem has said in his ghazals is novel since no one else has touched the subjects covered by Muslim Saleem in his ghazals before him. This is a sign of great poetry, which will be remembered for years to come.)

Shahid Akhtar a great but forgotten poet of Bhopal: Muslim Saleem

Recently Parvez Akhtar presented book “Naqd-e-Jaan” of poet Shahid Akhtar to me at a function in Bhopal. When I went through the book, it was my honest observation that I am reading Ghazals and Nazms of a great poet, who sometimes matches the scales of Faiz Ahmad Faiz and other poets of Taraqqi Pasand era. Shahid Akhtar was born in 1934 and died on May 27, 1972. Like Keats, he had a short life and died young, but has left of treasure trove of high standard poetry in the form ghazals, nazm and sonnets (geet). Despite era of progressive thoughts, there is romanticism in his ghazals. His worthy heir Parvez Akhtar has got Shahid Akhtar’s majmooa through MP Urdu Akedmi for which I congratulate him. The book costing Rs. 100 can be obtained from MP Urdu Akedmi.

**********************************************************************************Shakeela Bano Bhopali

Shakeela Bano BhopaliDied in Mumbai on December 16, 2002 at 59. Though a great qawwali exponent, Shakila Bano Bhopali was a poetess in her own right. Bhopal has been known to the rest of India and world for three counts. The most recent being the infamous gas tragedy in 1984, after which Bhopal came on the world map. Before it, the Indian people knew Bhopal as the city of lakes and city of Shakila Bano Bhopali. Though literary circles, which can be counted on fingers, knew Bhopal for city where Allama Iqbal had stayed briefly and where Nuskha-e-Arshi of Ghalib was discovered. She died almost in penury. Out-of-work for years, her long hospitalisation rendered her bankrupt. Born into a middle-class, orthodox family in Bhopal, Bano was spotted by B R Chopra and Dilip Kumar during the shooting of Naya Daur near Bhopal. She sang many a popular number for films, including Milte hi nazar tumse hum hogaye deewane (Ustaadon Ke Ustaad), She had memorised hundreds of ghazals and would quote them copiously.

A romantic poet in her own right, Bano had a collection Ek Ghazal Aur to her credit. Poetess and legendary singer, who transformed the face of qawwaali with her flamboyant and uninhibited singing style, died on 16th December 2002 at the St George Hospital, Mumbai after a massive cardiac attack at the age of 60.
