Trimaan Dhillon, aged 26, broke into Alice’s house and slit her throat ear to ear at her home in Rawling Road, Gateshead, in October last year.
While sentencing him, the judge described the murder as an utter act of barbarism, but Dhillon denied killing Alice saying that she fell on a knife during an argument with him.
He said his ex-girlfriend leapt at him with a carving knife but it got stuck in her neck when he tried to block her lunge and she fell on the floor.
Dhillon had climbed into Alice’s flat through an open window with an intent to murder her and probably trapped her while she was kneeling on her back and holding her head up to slash her throat at least six times, a report said.
The 24-year-old victim suffered 24 injuries, which includes defence wounds, while Dhillon who is over 6 feet tall suffered none.
